PARANG AND SALAWAKU, These are the traditional weapons of Maluku.Both of them are used in the Cakalele dance. The shield is decorated with motifs made with mother of pearl inlay. The size of the Parang and Salawaku can vary according to the age of the dancer. The people of Kakara Island in North Halmahera are well known for their skills at manifacturing these items.
PANDANUS MAT, Some of the most beautiful and characteristic handicraft of the region are the finely-woven, colorful pandanus mats. These come in a variety of sizes (usually quite large) and colors (bright purple, pink, green and blue are preferred). They are used for sitting and sleeping on the floor but the finest examples also form part of the dowry in traditional weddings. The skills of making these mats have been passed down from generation to generation in North Halmahera.
SALOI, This is the traditional conical back-basket used by the women of all native groups of North Halmahera. The shape and design varies from one ethnic group to the other. The baskets are used by women going to the fields or the market. The Makianese baskets of Malifut are usually smaller and more rounded in shape.
