GETTING TO NORTH HALMAHERA

The two main gateways to North Halmahera are the North Maluku capital of Ternate and the North Sulawesi capital, Manado. Both of these cities are well connected to other major tourist destinations in Indonesia, such as Bali, Java, South Sulawesi and South Maluku by air and sea, and they are very interesting places to visit in their own right.

From MANADO
By air: Wings Air flies from Manado’s Sam Ratulangi Airport to Kao in North Halmahera three times a week (monday, Wednesday and friday).

By sea: The passanger ship KM Elizabeth leaves the harbour in the center of Manado for Tobelo every Monday at 4.00 PM. Pelni’s more comfortable KM Sangiang should also sail from Bitung harbour (50 km from Manado) to Tobelo fortnightly, but is somewhat unreliable.

From TERNATE
By air: There is no flight from Ternate to North Halmahera.

By sea/road: First, take either a speedboat from Kotabaru jetty or Bastiong Ferry Port (both in Ternate city) to Sofifi on the west coast of Halmahera Island. From Sofifi you can travel by road to various destinations in North Halmahera.
If you want to take public transport, you should leave Ternate in the morning, as shared taxis from Sofifi to North Halmahera only run until the early afternoon.
