CAKALELE DANCE, The Cakalele is Maluku’s famous war dance, found both in North an Central Maluku.
It is nowadays performed both during traditional ceremonies and to welcome important guests.
The male dancer holds a parang (sword) and salawaku (shield) while the female partner holds a lenso (scarf).
TOKUWELA, Tokuwela is a traditional cultural performance which requires more than 20 people, accompanied by traditional songs, the men and women stand opposite each other joining hands so as to form a bridge on which a child must walk on. This game is generally performed by people from the Galelarese, Tobelorese and Lolodarese ethnic groups on special occasions. Tokuwela is a game that has been passed down from ancestors of the Galelarese ethnic group which until this very day has been preserved by the people of North Halmahera.
YANGERE MUSIC, Yangere is a characteristic style of music found mainly in North Halmahera. It is played by a group using several jup (small guitars) and a traditional kaste (a huge box-like string instrument). The groups usually perform this during special festivals like Christmas and New Year, going from house to house, asking for donations and drinks.
TIDETIDE DANCE, Tidetide is one of the most typically North Halmaheran dances, usually performed at events like weddings and traditional ceremonies. The movements of the hands during the Tidetide dance carry specific meanings, so the Tidetide can also be performed as a courtship dance. It is usually dance by a group of twelve people to the sounds of drums, gongs and violin.
